Bennett claims Sydney Major League’s top honour

The third annual Sydney Major League Awards night once again produced a spectacular night in Sydney’s Darling Harbour at the Star Room, IMAX theatre on Friday, April 27.

Over 170 people attended the Sydney Major League night where all the premiers from each grade and individual players from each of the four grades in the 2011/12 season were recognised.

Clubs officials, Baseball NSW Board Members and Chairman Ray Vercoe, the ABL CEO Peter Wermuth, Baseball NSW and Blue Sox Chief Advisor Bob Turner, Assistant General Manager of the Sydney Blue Sox Rob McCluskey and of course ABF Hall of Fame Lionel Harris were among the guests on the night.

The Baulkham Hills Baseball Club had a fantastic night picking up a bundle of team and individual awards. The Club Championship Trophy definitely a highlight for the club as they also took home three minor premiers trophy’s home and two premier’s trophies.

Some individual highlights from the Baulkham Hills Club included Dominic Woodward who was named Batter of the Year with Ben Lees and Jarryd Stanley securing the Pitcher of the Year in third and second grade respectively.

Matthew Bennett capped off the night for the Kookaburra as he claimed the Lionel Harris Medal for the 2011/12 season and in the process became the first player from the club to be awarded the medal.

Bennett had a fantastic year for his team producing a 1.09 ERA from his 58 innings pitched allowing just 15 runs with 67 strikeouts. Matt also contributed with the bat and had a batting average of .237 and a fielding percentage of .994 with just the one error.   

Matthew Bennett from the Baulkham Hills Club walked away with the coveted Lionel Harris Medal for the 2011/12 season in front five other nominees; Matt Aldridge (Ryde), Paul Anderson (Central Coast), Paul Bergan (Penrith), Nick Dimmers (Ryde Hawks) and Josh Freeman (Macarthur Orioles).

Other individual highlights from the awards night included youngster, Nathan Skinner from Penrith claiming back to back Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in the Under 18 competition.

Skinner had another outstanding year with a .476 batting average and a 1.000 slugging percentage from his 10 games played and 2 wins and 2 losses from his time on the mound which included 33 strikeouts from his 20 1/3 innings pitched.

Liam Blackourn from the Vikings grabbed two awards in the 1st Grade competition being named Rookie of the Year and 3rd Baseman of the year for the season.

An import from the USA, Dillon Morgan (Blacktown Workers) also picked up two awards with the Utility and Batting award in the 1st Grade competition. Dillon hit .393 with 12 RBI’s and an on base percentage of .507.

In an addition to the awards this year, the State Cup Most Valuable Players for the 2011 season were also named during the night. The State Cup MVP for each age group is a new addition to the State Cup season where coaches nominate a 3-2-1 point system for the opposing team. The State Cup MVP’s were as follows:

·         Under 12’s – Joshua Gessner (Manly)

·         Under 14’s – Aaron Wilkins (Macarthur)

·         Under 16’s – Ryan Whitley (Bankstown)

The Central Coast Marlins celebrated their history making season collecting there first 1st grade minor premiership and premiership trophies on a sensational night in Darling Harbour.

The Sydney Major League awards night wraps up another exciting Sydney Major League season for 2011/12. Players now move straight into the winter season while officials begin the planning for the 2012/13 season.
